Boxer on Cap and Trade

For those of you that don’t know, the Cap and Trade bill is going to the senate in the future very shortly. Boxer is one of the biggest pushers for this, since she is in charge of the Environmental Committee. She thinks hell fire and brimstone will follow if we don’t pass her bill. I’m going to recap something I emailed a friend this evening. First off I’m not a scientiest and am not a person that can tell you Global Warming is real or not real. But what is real, is the money in my account and the fixed income I live on. Here is my email:

I think everyone wants to use cleaner energy, but there is a right way and a wrong way of doing this. It really upsets me that we’re in one of the worst economic recessions, (worst for me, I’m only 28) and they want to have this cap and trade deal go through. They know it’s going to increase our energy cost. I guess we should listen to Joe Biden and be patriotic and do what they tell us? I think not. Even if we were not in a recession, alternative energy is not an viable option, cost wise yet. I think we’ll see some great break throughs in the next 5-7 years on solar energy and that it will be very competitive to coal and gas energy. But if they raise our energy bills now, then it will be cost effective much quicker.

Who stands to gain from cap and trade, in dollars? It’s not the American people. It’s Al Gore and his cronies, he has so much invested in this that if the governement doesn’t do something he will not reap from his investment. I think it’s basically the same battles we fought with oil companies, they want the money. Supply and Demand, which there isn’t a need for alternative energy, but they want to FORCE it.

I just read the article, she is sure of herself. It is going to take American people calling them non stop to get them to stop this bill. They believe this will create new jobs? They are out of their minds, this is going to cause more job losses when companies have to pay for more energy. Additionally cause more burden on foreclosed houses, because I’m in the boat with A LOT of Americans, I’m on a fixed income. I didn’t get my salary increase this year and so it’s made it tough, I was expecting it when I first bought my house mid last year. Cost of goods have gone up and the cost of energy to follow will cause me to sell my house and move to something smaller :( Which is why I work with my wife on her side business of photography. I do her website, marketing and sales. We have to do something entrepreneurial to help with the cost of living.

You should read up on Ray Kurzweil’s predictions if you’ve not heard of him. He is one of the leading philosophers on technology. He predicted the fall of the USSR during the 80′s, because of the communication changes with cell phones, faxes and the beginning use of computers. He makes some very good predictions on solar power, advanced artificial intelligence and even some scary ones of how humans and machines will become one in a phenomenon he calls the Singularity. If you enjoy science, this guy has some really FAR out ideas, but this guy has done a pretty good job on some of his other predictions, so he’s worth reading up on. http://singularity.com/

Something else to consider, what good is it if ONLY the uS does this? I mean China and India are now developing nations with 33% of the world populations. If they don’t take part, it really won’t matter much. Why cut our legs economically and handicap our business compared to theirs? It is no wonder why we are always outsourcing our jobs…

Not saying I agree with the Cap and Trade method, but the arguments against moving into alternative energy sounds a lot like going from Freon to Pureon. It was a pain (still have an older car that I can’t recharge), it costed money to switch the industry, it costed consumers who converted the older cars, and it seemed like it wouldn’t do anything if we were one of the few countries doing it. However, we all got over the costs, other countries followed our lead, we found out there were side benefits, and ultimately we fixed the problem by collectively lowering the Freon levels dramatically. The ozone hole problem was essentially reversed (although nobody really remembered to tell us, and we forgot to care about it).

If we wait for a ‘good time’ to take the hit to our wallets and lives, it will honestly never happen…

My major concern is were in a recession right now. It would be at least different if say 2-3 years ago. Still none the less, there is not enough scientific proof for me to say cap and trade is needed. I was talking to a friend the other day, he mentioned Greenland use to be green at one time less than 1000 years ago. The Vikings use to grow grapes and other food on the peninsula. The current average temperature on earth has decreased by .73 degrees the past year and just in 1976 we were going to have global cooling. We’ve continued the down slide in our cooling temperature. Right now we have he said she said stuff going on. Nobody can give any solid proof from either side. Additionally recent research shows that plants give off CO2 emissions as well :) So…how do you explain plants being around for millions of years and the earth is still here.

There are any million of things that can happen and take our the planet. But I’m not going to go crazy over everything that is or isn’t “Damaging” the planet. I think everyone would like to use solar or wind energy, but the truth is we’re still a few years out before it’s cost effective. Let the capitalist markets work with supply and demand. We don’t have an infinite amount of coal or oil. So eventually we will have to move to reusable energy.

Back in the mid 90′s when Freon was banned, there was no recession. Additionally you can still get get Freon today, until mid next year. And recycled Freon until 2020. Again not enough information for me to make an informed decision on why it is bad for the system, other than “omgsh, the ozone is depleting”. Take chicken little to the back of the barn and chop his head off! We just can’t have this screaming of the sky falling, with out any good evidence.

What I do know is that my wallet is getting low and I’m struggling to make the mortgage just a little more each month. Mess with my living conditions and that’s when you’ll start to see some really upset Americans, no matter how good something is. We’re a tolerant people, but when we get pushed enough, we’ll step up and make our voices heard.

Wallet concerns aside, government regulation is becoming more and more frightening. The problem is that, as usual, we have been given false choices. Our Fiat Government has had us debating Cap and Trade, all the while they had their secret weapon: the EPA. What’s worse, the battle has already been lost. The EPA, about a week ago, declared CO2 to be a toxin, thus able to be regulated under their already existing authority. They are simply giving congress the ‘courtesy’ of creating the laws they want, otherwise they’ll do it themselves. Is it possible for us to ever know what the REAL battle is, or are we doomed to only ever debate what the media (on both sides) tell us to?
